Touch is our first and only way to communicate when we enter the world as a newborn. It is our antenna to receive love and affection and of vital significance for establishing our first social relationships.
Touch constitutes our first language.
Sculpture has a language with similar qualities of communication; it is honest, direct, and pure.
I’ve chosen the medium to voice my reflections about the issues shaping our contemporary world.
As a disciple of the Renaissance, I gravitate towards figurative depiction, with the human landscape offering a vast vocabulary for expression.
But beyond the aesthetic aspects of the Renaissance, the spirit of “rebirth” of humanistic ideas informs my work.
I regard this spirit as extremely relevant to current times.
My work explores human characteristics and patterns of societal behavior. I am drawn to depicting the hidden truths that we prefer not to see behind shiny images, and I attempt to condense the complexity of prevalent moral beliefs into simpler forms.
I articulate my narratives by using different layers and metaphors as a means of expression.
I am driven by curiosity and passion. Working on a sculpture means building an intimate and mindful relationship with the piece itself.
It is an intense activity, both physically and mentally. The brain must constantly think in three dimensions while working, persistently projecting the finished form onto the stone.
The act of sculpting is a focused, continuous process of reviewing, rethinking, redrawing, refining, and reshaping until I resonate with what I have created.
That is the core of what I do – and an analogy to life.
My hands are my tools to lead me and make decisions. I rely upon my sense of touch to assess the contours and shapes I am working on.
My hands identify errors and check the figure, they provide additional information that eyes cannot deliver; touch is an integral part of my process.
With my sculptures I want to build bridges; I invite the viewer to leave their comfort zones, as I do push myself to leave my own.
I provoke in order to inspire viewing from different angles, to allow for new perspectives and a discourse about what imprint we want to leave on the world.
I attempt to encourage critical thinking, combined with respect, compassion and empathy – ingredients of the glue that keeps us together as a society :
the human touch.
