malfunction - male function back

With Malefunction I want to question the role of men today, the stereotype of masculinity passed on from generation to generation. This stereotype links masculinity to aggression, power, status, competition, and domination. A remnant of the ancient hunter-gatherer mentality, it still heavily determines and negatively influences our social coexistence and welfare.

Throughout the world, men commit most physical and psychological acts of violence. Despite varying national and cultural patterns, this is rooted in patriarchal systems and the persisting acceptance of traditional masculinity.

While improvements in gender relations have been achieved over the past decades, we are still far from gender equality.
Encouraging young men to change their mindset and redefine their role and identity will depend on offering them new beliefs and values as we outline non-violent ways of conflict solving.

Above all, I see the need to set up new social expectations; this will require inspiring examples, targeted education, and political will to bring about a structural change.

I made Malefunction of pristine white Carrara marble and hollowed out the male torso in a technique acting as a metaphor for “reading between the lines.” I removed substance and reduced it to what I deem most essential:
the back, as a symbol for attitude.
