The sculpture's title is a play on words: The term “fair game” derives from hunting. It denotes animals for pursuit within a particular hunting ground and season. The title also signifies "a game which is not fair".
The sculpture is a critique of how women are treated as fair game. Reducing women to mere objects of men’s desires is a global problem rooted in patriarchal societies. Sexual harassment and violence - verbal or physical - are structural problems. These are problems we do not solve, with world leaders who go unpunished when proudly assuming power over women’s bodies and insulting them with name-calling.
I have chosen Carrara Paonazzo marble, with its characteristic grey and brown-orange veins, already naturally emphasizing marks of physical abuse. The body is in a bent-down, contorted posture, the legs transition into an abstract board, tied down with a hemp rope indicating violence.
My intention is to bring focus to both the single incident of not being able to escape torment and the bigger picture - our immobility and inability to alter the prevailing mindset as a society.
Finally, I envision the metaphor of the board to also hold a sign of hope: forming a “board”, in the sense of a committee of women, who constitute an ongoing resistance to patriarchy and the fight for equal footing, or simply for a fair game.
